Exploring our Local Community – Allotment Visit

Our Little Angels (Lions) were exploring our local community when we had the opportunity to visit the Randalls allotments (run by Cobham Garden Club) in Old Nurseries Lane on Tuesday 29th September to see what fruit, vegetables and flowers were growing.  With lots of help from parents to hold hands and keep safe on the roads, the children walked to the allotments to meet Dave and chairperson George.  They showed us around, let us handle the vegetables and flowers that had been growing, told us about the farm shop thats open for fresh produce and gave us some tomatoes, sweetcorn and flowers to take back to Nursery.  Although we grow things back in our garden at the nursery it was fascinating to see what different types of vegetables and flower you can grow in the allotment.  We were so well behaved that we have been invited back in the Spring and Summer terms!

The Cobham Garden Club (formally known as Cobham Garden and Horticultural Association) has been part of
our community for over 40 years and is still thriving.

THE CLUB IS RUN BY VOLUNTEERS AND BOASTS A SHOP “GREENFINGERS” THAT OPENS FOR BUSINESS EVERY SATURDAY BETWEEN 11.30 AND 2.00PM.
We sell sundries, composts, lawn sand and all garden accessories at very competitive prices. We are a non-profit making organisation all our prices are very competitive. Free advice from seasoned gardeners is always on hand. We also organise 2 flower shows per year in June and September to encourage people to grow and exhibit vegetables, flowers and crafts in a competition. Categories will be published well in advance for each show.

We have plant sales throughout the summer – at a fraction of the cost of plants available in the local garden centres, and arguably better quality. Allotment holders also offer surplus vegetables for sale for which we only ask for a small donation to the Garden Club which will go towards the upkeep of the shop, or towards social events.

Activities (free to members)

– Twice yearly flower shows
– 7 social nights throughout the year with a guest speaker on a variety of subjects which are always interesting and make for an enjoyable evening.
– Annual summer barbecue, complete with bouncy castle for the children – and your food cooked for you by experts.
